FXFOWLE has integrated principles of environmental responsibility and civic accountability in architectural solutions since the firm's founding over 30 years ago.
In the 1970s, Bruce Fowle incorporated energy-saving strategies in his passive solar home designs. These early explorations led to an innovative approach rooted in conservationist values. This ingenuity continued throughout the firm’s history, including in the groundbreaking Condé Nast Building at 4 Times Square, the first green skyscraper in the United States. This project was a catalyst for the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system.
These founding values continue to inspire us to advance sustainable design and help improve the state of the planet. We have an extensive portfolio of green projects, more than 15M square feet of LEED registered or certified space, including three Platinum and eight Gold projects. Going beyond current practices, we are designing projects such as the Housatonic River Museum, which will be the first carbon neutral museum in the United States, and incorporates principles of the Living Building Challenge.
FXFOWLE's projects represent the assimilation of years of knowledge and technical expertise building sustainable environments congruous with clients’ values. This is only one aspect of the firm’s commitment to sustainability. We have authored pioneering sustainable guidelines for future developments, provided leadership and expertise in green civic initiatives, such as Mayor Bloomberg's NYC Green Codes Task Force, and are actively involved in organizations such as the NY Chapter of the US Green Building Council, AIA and ASHRAE.
Our workplace also reflects our commitment to sustainable design. FXFOWLE is the first architectural practice to receive an ENERGY STAR Small Business Award. We are Carbon Neutral as of 2008.
