KINGS COUNTY Criminal COURTHOUSE Renovation
Brooklyn, NY
Client: NYC Department of Design and Construction
Completion: 2012
Area: 200,000 sf
The Kings County Criminal Court project is a full renovation of the historic court building located at 120 Schermerhorn Street, facing Smith and State Street. The original 1930 structure was designed by Collins & Collins in the Renaissance Revival Style. Retaining the character of the original style, while upgrading to a modern court facility is the project's main objective. The 13 floor renovation includes total restacking and replanning of all departmental spaces, new arrest-to-arraignment areas, new lighting, and finish upgrades for the main lobby and all public corridors, and new state-of-the-art prototypical courtroom and arraignment court designs. Refurbishing also includes the original main floor and upper lobbies. This project is anticipated to achieve LEED certification.
