Queens Museum of Art Competition Entry

Queens, NY

Client: New York City Department of Design and Construction
Competition: 2001
Area: 100,000 sf

As one of five competition finalists, FXFOWLE’s entry for the Queens Museum of Art Expansion on the idea that the Museum is an infinitely unfolding story in a diverse, fluctuating community. Its historic context in the former World's Fair site and its desire to expand into a cultural arts center led the team to design the Museum as a celebration of the evolution from past to present and a stage for the transition from present to future. Program spaces overlap to provide maximum flexibility, including a large multipurpose space that also serves as an auditorium. On the exterior, outdoor seating and a mobile billboard connect park users to the museum. The roof trusses of the existing building are preserved, covered with a patchwork of glass and photovoltaic panels that allow daylight to enter the space. A glass membrane covers exposed façade sections, forming linear spaces that put the movement of visitors — culture itself — on display. This Project won the Design Award from the AIA New York Chapter.
