Lehman College Communication Center
Bronx, NY
Client: City University of New York
Completion: 2003
Area: 4,000 sf
The Communication Center functions as both a prominent campus entrance and a 24-hour security and emergency response headquarters for this CUNY college. The building’s design marries the required functional and technical aspects with contextual and architectural ideas about building form, material expression, visual connection, and pedestrian movement. The site immediately around the building has been refined to create a strong relationship to the main north-south axis of the tree-lined campus walkway. A new plaza creates a transition space between two predominant pedestrian paths and a landscaped seating area for students and faculty. The metal-clad cylinder serves as the core security monitoring station and serves as focal point along the campus perimeter.
