Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
Shanghai, China
Client: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
Completion: 2000
Area: 630,000 sf
This regional headquarters for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China was one of the first new buildings to be constructed in the Pudong District of Shanghai, a major new economic development zone across the Huangpu River from the historic city center, and was the first Green Tower in Shanghai. The tower portion of the building consists of twin slabs. One serves as a static background element for the other — a curving, dynamic form symbolizing the Bank's presence in the region and its outward vision. These juxtaposed forms give shape to the office floors and act as a foil for the curved banking pavilion and smaller scale program elements at the building's base. The building's façade consists of a composition of glass curtainwall and brise soleil contrasted with solid stone masses with punched windows. This project won a design award from the Society of American Registered Architects.
