THE New York Times Building
New York, NY
Client: New York Times / Forest City Ratner
Completion: 2007
Area: 1,500,000 sf
Renzo Piano Building Workshop and FXFOWLE collaboratively designed a new headquarters for The New York Times. The building, located on Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st Street opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal, unites the company’s employees under one roof in an exceptional signature structure. The design incorporates a transparent glass tower screened by planes of glazed terracotta tubes that appear to float above the street. An advanced sunshading system, floor-to-ceiling glass, increased ceiling heights, efficient lighting and mechanical systems, displaced ventilation, extensive mock-up testing, and a variety of additional sustainable features ensure that The New York Times Building is a new standard of comfort, productivity and efficiency in high-rise office space. The project won two awards from the AIA New York Chapter and the 2009 AIA Honor Award for Architecture.
