GLOUCESTER GREEN Master Plan

Gloucester, MA

Client: Client Name
Completion: 2003
Area: 17 acres

FXFOWLE’s winning competition entry was featured at the Boston Society of Architects Density symposium. The plan for a blighted 17-acre site at the railroad station recognizes the natural organization of the site area and incorporates atelier housing — created from recycled shipping containers — in an arc following the tracks. The spine is sheathed in a living brise soleil, establishing a green backdrop to the city and anchored by civic spaces at each end. These nodes of civic activity are gateways to the city and its civic core as well as links between a new Gloucester Green and the surrounding neighborhood. The design knits together both the man-made and natural — space, uses, and community. Fingers extend though the arc, while layers of mutually supportive uses — natural, civic, retail, office, and housing — are horizontally superimposed for a totally integrated community.
