American Bible Society Renovation and Addition

New York, NY

Client: American Bibly Society
Completion: 1998
Area: 145,000 sf

With the addition to, and renovation of, the American Bible Society, FXFOWLE was challenged to bring a fresh new presence to the facade and convey the Society’s message to the public while making the building, bookstore, offices, and a new second floor gallery inviting to the users. To meet this challenge, FXFOWLE designed an all-glass pavilion that projects from the original 1960s modern classic headquarters toward Broadway. The Society’s message is conveyed through a multi-screen video system and etched inscriptions on the glass, which are integrated with the high-tech glass and steel structure. The transparency and lightness of the pavilion allows the vision of the passerby to penetrate the interior space. The glass volume complements, rather than competes with, the forceful facade of the building beyond.
