Bergenline Avenue Tunnel Station
Union City, NJ
Client: New Jersey Transit
Completion: 2006
Area: 75,000 sf
For the new Hudson Bergen Light Rail Transit System, 12 stations were designed to link the urban towns of Eastern New Jersey. Design guidelines were set to maintain a consistent look for the stations, but also to incorporate the local flavor of each station area. Sited atop the Palisades, New Jersey Transit’s Bergenline Avenue Tunnel Station is a key intermodal node and the system’s only tunnel station, with the platform located 160 feet below grade. At the plaza level, access to the platform below is provided by elevators within a brick and glass headhouse structure, flanked by vent stacks and a sleek glass canopy. Site specific art installations were integrated into the design.
