Glen Cove Ferry Terminal

Glen Cove, NY

Client: The City of Glen Cove
Completion: 2006
Area: 30,000 sf

Historically ferry terminals have been gateways to cities along a waterfront. Glen Cove is no exception. After designing a revitalization plan for the City, FXFOWLE was commissioned to lead the design of a ferry terminal as a central component in the plan. By creating a public water-transit system which directly connects to Hempstead Bay and Long Island Sound, the new Terminal seeks to strengthen the connections between the existing downtown, the waterfront and destinations beyond. Drawing from the proposed Glen Isle Development, the new facility make several transitions as the site narrows - naturally bringing together pedestrian, vehicular and recreational traffic. Bridging covered-grade parking to the west and the waters edge to the south, the Ferry Terminal is responding to its primary function as it relates to the ferries themselves, although activation of the waterfront is a shared goal.
