In anticipation of the AirTrain connection to John F. Kennedy Airport, the downtown Jamaica Transportation Center Master Plan was developed, including an Area-Wide Transportation Plan, a Development Plan, and an Urban Design Plan. The AirTrain places this major commercial center within a short 8-minute transit trip from the Airport, closer than any comparable location. The plan calls for accommodating off-airport businesses and services in downtown Jamaica as part of a development strategy to spur future growth. The plan strengthens commercial districts and buffers residential areas by clarifying zoning and enhancing streetscapes with appropriate character, landscape, and urban design features. It is currently being implemented. This project received an urban design Award of Merit from AIA New York State.
